A brief history lesson of The Boardroom:
Have you ever noticed the elephant stonework on the face of our building before? 🐘
It represents a lot more than you may realise, if you want to find out why, just keep reading…
The building the Boardroom is housed in is actually called The Elephant, and if you look up when you're visiting us you can still see a grand elephant's head carving. It has traded as a pub since at least 1787, and was rebuilt in 1866-7 which is when the splendid elephant’s head carved in stone was placed on the front of the building on the first floor.
In more recent years, and still within living memory, The Elephant opened as a ‘gay bar’ in 1973 and was one of Bristol’s first. Back in the 70's and 80's it still had the same U-shaped bar it has today, and was a popular haven for the LGBTQ+ community.
Legend has it that it gained its name in commemoration of a visit to Bristol of an elephant gifted to Queen Victoria, which was paraded around the town at the same time the pub first opened. The venue has had many titles over the years and is now known as Boardroom, but if you stand at the front and look up, you can still see the iconic elephant stonework relief on the front of the building. There's a mysterious letter 'A' underneath our elephant, and if anyone out there can tell us why, we'd love to hear from you.
In 2006 The Elephant ceased being a gay bar and changed to The Ivory, which had a bar on the ground floor and an upstairs restaurant. It briefly returned as The Elephant in 2011 closing down again just a few years later in 2014. And finally, in 2015 opened it's doors for the very first time as The Boardroom, a name it still trades under to this day.
